Salve!
Well things never turn out as you plan right? The shoes I liked were available, at various stores, but each had it's own "pain in the a**" aspect that I had to seriously weigh for a Saturday morning.
First the Altra Lone Peak 6.0 is "last season" and so not available except for shipping and of course in colors I don't like! The Altra Lone Peak 7.0 is available but first color choice not. That's okay, but I didn't know how they would fit and because of the "pain in the a**" aspect I decided to opt in for a local big sporting goods store, Dicks Sporting Goods, to see if they might have some wide toe box trail shoes in stock. Thankfully my brother decided to accompany me to pick out a good shoe.
My brother, a big fitness expert, and being very well aware of the difference between normal walking shoes and "trail," he convinced me to look at a Nike shoe -- a brand I despise because they make shoes so narrow among other reasons. However, a cost of $54.28 (on sale) and a wide available in my size, I tried on the Nike Revolution Wide for Women, the 2022 version I think? It fit, a big tight in the ankle and heel but the toe box seemed good, not as wide as a Topo (and I'm guessing not as roomy as the Altra) but decent.
Since I'm just starting out and the price was about 1/3 of the more fancy brands, I opted for the Nike Revolution Wide and purchased six pairs of thin socks to wear with them -- all for less than $80 which I think is good considering the Topo and the Altra sell for $150.
Tomorrow I'll walk to my brother's house in my new shoes. He lives about 1.1 miles away with two steep parts. I will check in tomorrow after that walk to let you know my thoughts on the new shoes!
Valeatis!
